The recently released Donkey Kong Bananza got a surprise DLC announcement as part of today's Nintendo Direct. It's called DK Island & Emerald Rush and like the name suggests it features a rendition of the classic DK Island alongside a new game mode.
Emerald Rush is a roguelike mode of sorts that has you collecting fossils around a remixed version of layers from the base game. As you do, you can get random upgrades called perks to power up Donkey Kong. It's mostly a high score based mode, but playing will unlock new fashion options and collectible trophies that can be placed on DK Island.
What's most surprising is that this game mode is releasing today: September 12, 2025. It's paid DLC that costs $20. That's sure to leave a sour taste for some, as paid DLC this close to the game's release hints at content that may have been ready to go for the game's launch and perhaps should have been included.
