Chapter 1

-Pallet Town- To start your adventure, go ahead and select "New Game" from the menu. After doing so, you'll be greeted by a man named Professor Oak. He will briefly explain the basic concept of this game. He will soon prompt you to tell him your name, so go ahead and choose one. He will then introduce you to your rival, who you also have the option of naming.
Once all of this is done, you will be transported to a room, and you will have full control of your character. You can go ahead and explore your room, but the only thing of any interest to you is your PC in the top left corner of your room. Walk up to it and press A. The press "Withdraw Item" and choose "Potion". Once you're done wandering aimlessly, go ahead and walk down the stairs at the top right corner of your room.
You can go ahead and talk to the woman sitting at the table, who happens to be your mother, and she will notify you that all boy's must leave home someday, and that Professor Oak is looking for you next door. Now you want to make your way up to the grass at the northern part of town. Before you have a chance to step out onto the grass here, Professor Oak stops you. If you are playing Pokemon Yellow Version, the Professor catches a wild Pikachu that attempts to ambush you. Either way, the Professor will lead you back to his lab. Once in the lab, you will meet up with your rival for the first time, and the Professor tells you that can pick between the three starer Pokemon: Charmander, the fire type; Squirtle, the water type; and Bulbasaur, the grass type. In Yellow Version, you don't have a choice, and you will receive a Pikachu. Your Pikachu is not like a normal Pokemon however, and instead of staying in it's Pokeball, it will follow you around. Choose any of these three Pokemon, but keep in mind that your rival will choose the Pokemon that your Pokemon is weak against, when his turn comes. This means if you chose Charmander, he will choose Squirtle; If you chose Squirtle, he will choose Bulbasaur; If you chose Bulbasaur, he will choose Charmander. In Yellow, he will choose Eevee. I recommend choosing Bulbasaur if you're a beginner, Squirtle if you're an intermediate player, and Charmander if you're and advanced player.

If you attempt to leave the lab, your rival will challenge you to a battle. Your Pokemon will have two moves, a physical damaging move, and a status affecting move. I suggest just using your physical damaging move (Scratch, Tackle, or Thundershock) for the entirety of the battle, as your status affecting moves (Tail Whip or Growl) won't do you any good in this battle. Unless your rival gets a critical hit, you should win. If he does land a critical hit, and it doesn't knock you out, I suggest using the Potion that you received earlier. Once you beat him, your Pokemon will advance to Level 6, and it's stats and HP will improve. After winning, go ahead and leave the lab, and head back to your house, where you can talk to your mom and get your Pokemon healed free. Afterwards, head back up to the grassy area where the Professor stopped us earlier.

Welcome to Route 1. Routes are basically areas that connect cities, and almost always have tall grass spread all over them. When walking through tall grass, you can encounter wild Pokemon. You can either battle these Pokemon for experience, catch them with a Pokeball, or run away from them. We can't catch any yet as we don't have any Pokeballs. The two wild Pokemon that appear on this Route are Pidgey and Rattata, as you can see in the "Route 1 Pokemon Table" above. That table also tells us the percent chance that every Pokemon has to appear when you encounter a wild Pokemon.
Anyways, simply continue northward on this route, until you see your first human. Go ahead and talk to him, and he will tell you he works for the super market, and give you another free Potion. Noone else will give you anything on this Route, so I suggest heading straight up to Viridian City.
-Viridian City- Once you arrive in Viridian City, the first thing that you want to do is enter a building known (it says "Poke" on it) as the Pokecenter. Here you can heal all of your Pokemon for free. There is a Pokecenter in every single town. After doing so, take the left path out of town, until you see a mountain, with a forest area to it's right. There is a very narrow path in between these two, which you can continue down until you are stopped by an unusual looking tree. Simply press "A" here to receive a Potion. Now you want to enter the building with "Mart" written on it, which is known as the Pokemart. Here you can buy and sell goods and items. When you walk in, the cashier tells you he has a parcel to deliver to Professor Oak, and asks you to do it for him. There isn't much you can do here now, so go ahead and take Route 1 down to Pallet Town and walk into the Professor's lab.
Once your back at the lab, go ahead and talk to the Professor. He will open up his package to find a custom Pokeball. He then explains that he would like you to travel all around the world, filling out a electronic Pokemon encyclopedia known as the Pokedex, which he will then give to both you and your rival. Afterwards, he tells you to go on and start your adventure. Before leaving though, your rival mentions getting a Town Map from his sister. You can get one as well, by going to the house directly north of the lab, and talking to the girl sitting at the table there. After doing so, head back to Viridian City via Route 1.
-Viridian City- Once in Viridian City, head north until you see an old man pacing. If you tried to go this way earlier, this man wouldn't let you through becuase he was to crabby. However, he has now had his coffee and is willing to teach you how to catch a Pokemon. After this is done, you have the option of going to the Pokemart and buying things, such as Pokeballs. At this point, you have a choice to make. In order to get five Pokeballs free, you must head down Route 22 (take the exit on the far left side of town) and battle your rival a second time. However, if you do this, you'll miss out on a cool battle later, so I suggest just buying some Pokeballs at the Pokemart. If you beat your rival the first time, you should have enough money to buy 15 Pokeballs.
