Super Smash Bros. Melee has eleven hidden fighters and eleven hidden stages. The following guide will explain the various unlock methods for each of them and give helpful tips on making the process as easy as possible.
After completing the unlock conditions for each character, you must defeat that character in a 1 stock battle to unlock it. If you lose this battle, you can try again by replaying the same match type or in some cases completing the condition again.
Method 1: Clear Classic or Adventure mode with any character.
Method 2: Play 50 VS. matches.
Tip: Play Classic mode with five lives on Very Easy.
Method 1: Clear Classic or Adventure mode with Mario without the use of continues.
Method 2: Play 100 VS. matches.
Tip: Play Classic mode with five lives on Very Easy.
Method 1: Clear Event Match #37.
Method 2: Play 200 VS. matches.
Tip: In Event Match #37, focus on throwing every Pokeball instead of fighting normally.
Method 1: Clear 100-man melee.
Method 2: Play 300 VS. matches.
Tip: Use Fox in 100-man melee. His shine (down-b) is a one-hit KO on every enemy, you can often kill many at once with a single shine.
Method 1: Play Classic, Adventure, or VS. mode with the 14 starter characters.
Method 2: Play 400 VS. matches.
Tip: You can play quick one stock VS. matches with all 14 starter characters. You don't even need to win them.
Method 1: Clear Classic or Adventure mode with ten characters.
Method 2: Play 500 VS. matches.
Tip: Play Classic mode with five lives on Very Easy.
Method 1: Clear Event Match #29.
Method 2: Play 600 VS. matches.
Tip: If you are having trouble defeating Ganondorf, try using Link's grounded spin attack (up-b) and down air (down-a).
Method 1: Play VS. mode for a total of 20 hours.
Method 2: Play 700 VS. matches.
Tip: Play time is caculated by the number of total hours humans have spent playing. You can plug in four controllers and leave the game running for five hours.
Method 1: Finish the first level in Adventure mode, Mushroom Kingdom, with a 2 in the second timer like XX:X2. Then defeat Luigi and Peach in less than one minute and finish Adventure mode.
Method 2: Play 800 VS. matches.
Tip: Play on Very Easy and wait before crossing the finish line on the first level. Stand right in front of it and wait for a 2 on the right side of a timer to finish.
Method 1: Clear Classic or Adventure mode with Marth without the use of continues.
Method 2: Play 900 VS. matches.
Tip: Play Classic mode with five lives on Very Easy.
Method 1: Clear Classic, Adventure, or Target Test mode with all other characters.
Method 2: Play 1,000 VS. matches.
Tip: The quickest way to unlock Mr. Game & Watch is to clear Targest Test (Break the Targets) with every other character. If you are having trouble with this, remember that you probably already cleared Classic mode with at least ten characters to unlock Young Link.

Unlock: Play 50 VS. matches.
Series: Earthbound
Unlock: Play 100 VS. matches.
Series: F-Zero
Unlock: Play 150 VS. matches.
Series: Pokémon
Unlock: Play 200 VS. matches.
Series: Super Mario
Unlock: Get the Birdo Trophy. This is a random trophy that can appear in Classic mode, Adventure mode, or the lottery.
Series: Game & Watch
Unlock: Unlock Mr. Game & Watch.
Series: Super Smash Bros.
Unlock: Clear All-Star mode with any character.
Series: Super Smash Bros.
Unlock: Clear every Event Match.

Series: Kirby
Unlock: Clear Target Test with every character.

Series: Yoshi
Unlock: Hit the Sandbag 1,323 feet in Home Run Contest.
Tip: Use Yoshi and repeatedly do a short hop down-air to flutter kick the sandbag and rack up damage. Then land a home run at the last second. If you rack up ~120% before the home run you should make it.
Series: Donkey Kong
Unlock: Clear 15-min Melee.
Tip: Use Donkey Kong and spam down-b to kill the wireframes in one hit with a constant hitbox. Be prepared to recover if you are hit and watch out for bombs that can be hidden inside item containers.
Clear 6 Events.
Clear 10 Events.
Clear 16 Events.
Clear 22 Events.
Clear 27 Events.
Clear 27 Events and unlock Jigglypuff, Dr. Mario, Falco, Young Link, and Luigi.
Unlock Events 1-39 and unlock all characters.
Clear Events 1-50.
Unlock every character.
Unlock Brinstar Depths, Fourside, Big Blue, Poke Floats, Mushroom Kingdom II, and Flat Zone.
Unlock every stage.
Unlock every character.
Unlock every unlockable (excluding trophies).
Get 500 KOs in VS. mode.
Press L or R before a battle begins.
