Animal Crossing New Horizons House Upgrades

Once you arrive on your deserted island in Animal Crossing New Horizons, Tom Nook will start you off with a small tent. A few million bells later, you can find yourself in a large home with mutiple stories and additional rooms. Below we'll detail the process for making that happen.

Before you can upgrade your house, you must first pay off the loan you took out for the previous upgrade. The first loan can be paid in Nook Miles, but the rest will be due in bells. There is no interest or deadline to pay these loans off. You can do so at your own pace. To pay off the loan, you'll need to use the ABD machine found in the Resident Services tent or Town Hall.

After paying off a loan, speak to Tom Nook about upgrading your house. The next day you'll have an upgraded home and a new loan to pay off. Because construction takes one day to happen, you can upgrade your house at most once a day.

Tent

The tent is a (hopefully) temporary accomodation you'll get when you first arrive on your island. It's a one room 4x4 grid. The loan will be 5000 Nook Miles.

House

The first upgrade is from a tent to a house. It's a single room in a 6x6 grid. It also includes 80 storage slots (accessible with right d-pad). The loan will be 98,000 bells.

Bigger Room

The next upgrade is a bigger room for your house. It's a single room in a 8x8 grid. It includes a total of 120 storage slots. The loan will be 198,000 bells.

Back Room

This upgrade adds an additional room to the back of your house. It's accessible via an opening on the back wall. The additional room is a 6x6 grid. It includes a total of 240 storage slots. The loan will be 348,000 bells.

Left Room

This upgrade adds an additional room to the left of your house. It's accessible via an opening on the left wall. The additional room is a 6x6 grid. It includes a total of 360 storage slots. With this upgrade, you can also start performing customizations to your roof and mailbox for 500 bells. These take a day to complete and can be initiated by Tom Nook. The loan will be 548,000 bells.

Right Room

This upgrade adds an additional room to the left of your house. It's accessible via an opening on the left wall. The additional room is a 6x6 grid. It includes a total of 400 storage slots. The loan will be 758,000 bells.

Second Floor

This upgrade adds an additional room above your house. It's accessible via a staircase to the left of your entrance area. The additional room on the second floor is a 10x6 grid. It includes a total of 800 storage slots. With this upgrade, you can begin customizing the exterior for your home. The loan will be 1,248,000 bells.

Basement

This upgrade adds an additional room below your house. It's accessible via a staircase to the right of your entrance area. The additional room in the basement is a 10x6 grid. It includes a total of 1600 storage slots. The loan will be 2,498,000 bells.

After paying off your house in full, you can do daily exterior renovations for free. You'll also be a proud homeowner free from the grasp of debt at the hands of Tom Nook, congratulations!
